The visit starts from St. Mark's Square, or as it is known locally Piazza San Marco.Considered one of the most beautiful Piazzas in the world, it is also one of the most famous. Music is floating in the air. Surrounding the Square are several very significant and spectacular buildings. You'll take a short walk to your tour's first stop -the magnificent 13th century Doge's Palace.
Not only the home of the Doge, Venice's elected ruler, the Palace was also the city's seat of government for centuries, and where some of the most important decisions for Venice's, and even Europe's destiny took place. Transgressions were taken very seriously. Thus, the Bridge of Sighs was built to link the Palace directly to the city's prison dungeons. When you look at the bridge, you'll notice two small windows. They provided prisoners their last look at Venice before being locked up. The name comes from their sighs of despair.Constructed more like a castle than a palace, the Palace's ornate façade is a classic example of Venetian gothic architecture. As you tour its stunning interior, you will get to see the famous Golden Staircase, the Great Council Chamber, and paintings by such masters asTintorettoandVeronese. After your visit, your knowledgeable guide will give you a brief talk explaining more about the history and importance of the area before escorting you to spectacular St. Mark's Basilica. A breath-taking landmark, this famous basilica is unlike any other. A testament to Byzantium's influence on Venice, it's adorned with golden facade mosaics, marble and bronze statues, and five domes, reminiscent of St. Sophia in Istanbul.
You'll then leave St. Mark's Square for a private Taxi boat tour to the islands of Murano & Burano. You will visit a glass factory on the island of Murano and you will have the opportunity to observe the Maestri at work during a glass blowing demonstration. Glass production moved to Murano from Venice in 1291 when furnaces were banned from the city for fire prevention. The artisans have developed a unique style and world-famous reputation for producing blown glass.Of course, there will be an opportunity to browse through the enticing display rooms where items may also be purchased. Arriving at Burano Island, you’ll step ashore for a visit to this colourful island, cheerfully decorated with brightly painted houses. Burano is well known for the art of lace making, fishing, and boat building. You will have time to stroll through the narrow streets and take the opportunity to purchase lace products from one of the vendors lining the path near Piazza Galuppi or to go looking for typical biscuits called "bussolà".
