Catania & The Fish Market
Your first stop will be the magnificent Baroque central square of Catania, Piazza del Duomo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The symbol of the city is the lava-stone fountain surmounted by an elephant carrying an obelisk, known as “Liotru,” believed to protect the city from disasters.
Facing the fountain stands the Cathedral of Saint Agatha, dedicated to the city’s patron saint, who was martyred at the age of 13 in 251 AD. Inside the cathedral lies the tomb of the famous composer Vincenzo Bellini.
On the other side of the square you will find the famous Pescheria, the lively and colorful fish market held every morning except Sunday. Here you will experience one of the most authentic and vibrant traditions of Sicilian daily life.
The Cyclops Riviera
After some free time for exploring and shopping, a short scenic drive along the coast will take you to the Cyclops Riviera.
According to legend, the lava rocks scattered along the coastline were thrown by the blinded Cyclops Polyphemus at Ulysses during their mythological battle.
You will admire these dramatic volcanic formations in front of the charming fishing villages of Aci Castello and Aci Trezza, famous for their spectacular views and traditional Sicilian atmosphere.
